Ultrasound is a non-invasive test that is used to diagnose certain diseases. At The Jones Center, ultrasound is used to diagnose and monitor atherosclerosis in the blood vessels of our diabetic patients. Atherosclerosis is a risk factor that can lead to heart disease, strokes, kidney failure, and amputations. Ultrasound is also used at The Jones Center to monitor thyroid disease and nodules, in addition in performing biopsies to insure accuracy of biopsy site. An ultrasound exam does not require contrast dye, is not contraindicated for patients with pacemakers and metal stents, and requires little if any patient prep.
The Ultrasound Department at The Jones Center is an accredited laboratory with the ACR (American College of Radiology) in General as well as Vascular ultrasound. To obtain this accreditation, laboratories have to employ registered Sonographers as well as achieve the standards set forth in protocol, documentation, equipment quality, reports, and continuing education. The Ultrasound department at The Jones Center has three registered Sonographers with the ARDMS (American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers).
Bonnie Burns RT, RDMS joined The Jones Center team in March of 2011 after working for The Coliseum Medical Center for 13 years. Bonnie successfully challenged the ARDMS registry exam for Abdomen and Small Parts in 2010. She brings with her not only her extensive experience and knowledge of the ultrasound exams performed at The Jones Center, but the skills needed to assist the physicians with invasive procedures such as the Fine Needle Aspiration and other biopsies.
